Do you know this nun?

In 2012, this extraordinary woman – armed with a small group of nuns – was instrumental in organizing the “Nuns on the Bus” tour of nine states to oppose the “Ryan Budget” approved by the House of Representatives.

This budget would decimate programs meant to help people in need. “Nuns on the Bus” received massive attention across the nation from religious communities, elected officials and the media.

She’s been featured in the national and international media, including appearances on 60 MinutesThe Colbert Report, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

So who is this woman? Sr. Simone Campbell is someone who is so passionate about her values and she doesn’t let anything get in the way of doing what needs to be done.

I heard her on this podcast a few months ago, and bookmarked it for when I needed inspiration.

Yes, she’s an attorney and has lots of credibility that she’s gained over the years. However, after listening to the podcast, she sounded like she could be my neighbor, friend, colleague or aunt.

Somehow, I wasn’t intimidated. I was inspired to be a better version of myself. I assume that it all began with a deep, deep belief that poverty is wrong. As nonprofit staff, volunteers, and board members, we all have a deep belief about something.

It got me to thinking.

Let’s see, I wonder if she get nervous when asking someone for money – a person that she know cares as much as much about economic inequality as she does?

Doubt it.

Does she stop growing and speaking her truth as a visionary when someone says no to something or there’s a roadblock? No pun intended.

If she doesn’t know how to do something, or doesn’t have the skills, does she let that get in her way? Or does she go find another nun on the bus with excel skills to compliment her public speaking ability?

I’m guessing the latter.

As we close in on 2015, lets get in touch with that part of ourselves that we feel so strongly about that it moves us to action.

Let’s find the fire in our belly. That’s the driver.

What would happen if you and I, and a gazillion others stepped up and let go of our silly fears, lack of confidence, or whatever else may be holding us back?
